Review: Crazy For You @ WMC

If you’re only going to see one musical this year, make sure it’s Crazy For You!

I’m a pretty critical and cynical person, but trust me, if I say this show is good… it’s GOOD! Full to the brim with stunningly talented actors, singers, dancers and musicians – there’s no way you will be leaving without a smile on your face!

Whilst the set design was about on par with most other musicals I’ve seen this year, there is no doubt in my mind that everything else about Crazy For you far surpasses the rest. Tom Chambers tapped his way onto the stage and had the audience immediately captivated by his portrayal of Bobby Child and his phenomenal dancing skills, not to mention his impressive voice. Charlotte Wakefield played the audience favourite, Polly Baker and constantly had everyone cheering for her as she took no nonsense from any other character on stage. The chemistry between her and Tom Chambers was electrifying and really showed in their performance.

Caroline Flack took on the role of Irene Roth and absolutely sold it! She sung and danced like a natural and had the audience laughing and cheering throughout. Her rendition of ‘Naughty Baby’ has to be the best version I’ve ever heard and I must admit, I was smiling throughout the entire song. A sassy, bossy and fantastically dramatic role was played by her perfectly and I cannot fault a thing.

As for the rest of the cast? Without a shadow of a doubt, the best I’ve ever seen live! Not only were they all tremendously talented at acting, singing and dancing, but they all played at least one or two instruments LIVE – some even played up to five instruments! I was completely blown away to to see this kind of talent. It gave me goosebumps through the whole performance.

Swing Shout Out!

Although I wish I could sit here and write a few words about each talented person on stage, this Swing Shout Out has to go to Seren Sandham-Davies. While everyone was exceptional, Sandham-Davies needs a special mention. The young performer played Patsy and brought such a raw innocence to her humorous role. Throughout the night she played the trumpet and banjo and got more than a few chuckles from the audience during some of the scenes. Full of energy, her love of what she does shines through in her brilliant performance. Make sure to keep an eye out for her name in the future!

The music itself was brilliant and I’m sure everyone who attends the show will have the songs stuck in their head all week. The technical side was as professional as I have come to expect from a show at WMC and every aspect of it all pieced together to create a smooth and naturally flowing show from everyone involved. If you love musicals and want to see something that will get your heart racing and your feet tapping then I cannot recommend Crazy For You enough. So, what are you waiting for? If you haven’t already booked your tickets then I suggest you stop reading this and go and book them now!
