A witness has a very important role in criminal cases, as they are the ones that have seen the incident happening, they can clarify to the judge and jury about everything they know and be able to give relevant information.
You may have been witness to a crime or have information about a crime.
In order to help the police to secure the prosecution of some criminals they need people to come forward and give evidence.
- You may be asked to give a statement of what happened and you could be asked to appear in court
- If you are under 16 one of your parents or your guardian must attend the court with you
- If you are under 14 you will not be asked to give evidence under oath. Being under oath means that you have to swear to tell the truth or only say what you believe to be the truth
- Being a witness in court can be difficult and even distressing if you are the victim of the crime that is being prosecuted however there will be people to assist and support you
Anyone with information should call South Wales Police on 101 or Crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence number 397760.
