It’s another bank holiday weekend! The forecast looks good as I write this, so get out and make the most of it.
Here’s a load of things you can get up to in Cardiff city and the surrounding area this week that, as always, won’t break the bank.
THURSDAY 2 MAY
The WMC has a new VR experience you can try if you’re passing through, but hurry, it’s only there til Saturday. This virtual reality extravaganza showcases all the different parts of Wales, and the raging modern music scene pulsing through it right now. Read about it on their website.
Boy Azooga’s Davey is on the DJ decks at Blue Honey Night Cafe. It’s free entry and runs from 9pm til 1am. Facebook event here.
FRIDAY 3 MAY
Ever feel like the system is getting you down? Head along to a free talk at Cathays Community Centre entitled “Mental Health and Capitalism”. It’s at 6:30pm, and there’s even an event page on that worst of capitalist monstrosities, the book which collects faces.
SATURDAY 4 MAY
May the 4th be with you, it’s Star Wars Day at Techniquest. Loads of sci fi events on, followed by a screening of the original film in the Science Theatre. Normal rates apply.
The Street Food Circus is back serving up all kinds of great eats all bank holiday weekend at Roath Yard, City Road, Cardiff. It is free entry, but I guess it’s up to you how much food you end up trying!
Pedal Power Cardiff, the cafe and repair shop for keen cyclists in Bute Park, is hosting an “easy” ride of 30 miles. The Sprout will not be held responsible for anyone not finding it easy! Meet for coffee and cake from 10am, and be back by 3.30pm. Should be a great day out- Facebook here.
SUNDAY 5 MAY
If for some reason walking from Cardiff to Merthyr sounds more appealing to you than riding it, you can take part in the Red Route walk, which, yes, walks from Cardiff to Merthyr in a group. It’s held by the arts orgs G39 and Made in Roath. Made in Roath’s premises on Inverness Place opens from 6pm, ready for a huge dinner at 7.30pm (You have to click going on Facebook if you want to get fed). They’re departing at 6am Monday morning, and you can also see that one on Facebook too.
If you’re not feeling up for a 26 mile walk there is also Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard’s er, interesting, concert The Late Night City Sermon. It’s from 9pm at Clwb Ifor Bach, with some special performances from local bands, and costs £9 altogether to get in. Facebook event here, tickets here.
TUESDAY 7 MAY
Cardiff has had a festival filled year this year, hasn’t it! The Eisteddfod, the Urdd, the Festival of Voice, RawFfest, and many other Welsh calendar events have decided to make the capital their home for the year. And now another joins us: it’s the Welsh International Documentary Festival, formerly one of the few things Blackwood had going for it! It might be a little too expensive for this list, at £25 for the whole event, but if you go a few of the events it might be worthwhile. The WIDF is in Chapter this year : see what’s on on the Chapter website.
There’s also this on at Waterstones Cardiff: “Do states have the right to exclude migrants?” A talk with Prof. Christopher Bertram, which will cost £3 to get in, at 6:30pm. Book tickets on Waterstones website and register interest on, as ever, Zuck’s homepage.
8pm at Beelzebub’s there’s a pub quiz. Though it doesn’t say how much for entry.
