Free and Cheap Things To Do in Cardiff 16-22 Aug

Posted on:   Posted by:

This week, many of the 18 year olds you know are probably going to be celebrating their A-Level results one way or another, even if they didn’t go too well! If you’re not feeling like taking part in that massive party, it might be best to avoid the town centre this weekend- in which case, here’s The Sprout’s list of cheap and free events that will hopefully be free from people in prom dresses and Leavers 18 hoodies…*

*The Sprout accepts no responsibility for any encounters with over-enthusiastic 18 year olds you may experience whilst leaving the house this weekend.

Leaning Into the Wind

17-23 Aug, various times – Chapter Arts Centre – £5.10 (PG)

There are a lot of great films on at Chapter this month, from the current box office smash hit sequels like Incredibles 2 and Mamma Mia 2, right down to animation favourites like The Iron Giant and Aardman’s Pirates. One film on the listing stood out to me: this crazy looking documentary about one of Britain’s foremost living artists. Andy Goldsworthy works with rocks, rain, leaves and trees to create art that involves nature and the human body in whole new ways. It looks to be a beautiful watch. Tickets on Chapter’s site.

Swim Safe Sundays

19 Aug 2.45pm – Cardiff International White Water – Free (7-14 year olds)

Have you been doing more swimming than normal this summer? Breast-stroke at Barry Island? Leapt into Ponty Lido? Maybe you fancy brushing up on your skills? Get a free swimming lesson on a Sunday down at the Cardiff International White Water. Don’t worry- they provide wetsuits. Book here and get more information here.

Howl Comedy August

19 Aug 8pm – Tramshed – £5 (18+) – Sprout Event

Howl Comedy Festival

You may have noticed a strange drought of comedy this month in Cardiff. Almost like the cream of the city’s comedy talent, including Lorna, the usual Howl hostess, have slunk off to Edinburgh to try their luck at the world’s biggest comedy festival. Not to worry though, some fantastic guests will take their place. Book on JokePit.

Prince’s Trust- Getting Started In Sport programme

20-24 August, 9.30am-4pm – Cardiff City Football Club – Sprout Event

A training course? On the events listings? You’re probably looking a bit confused by this one. But trust me, I’ve been down to the taster day today and it looks like an amazing week. When can you ordinarily say you’ve had a chance to paddle-board, play futsal, coach football, train tennis with a pro coach, and even brush up on your cooking skills, all in the same week? Almost never I bet- and definitely never for free! Get signed up quick, there are a very small number of places left.

Have fun out there!

Need more events? Why not bookmark The Sprout’s events listings for up-to-date information, and check back next week for the next round-up of awesome things to do in Cardiff that won’t break the bank.
