This autumn, Bulldozer Films are running a BFI Film Academy filmmaking course at Wales Millennium Centre. BFI Film Academy courses are for 16-19-year-olds who want to break into the film industry.
Will, an alumnus of the BFI Film Academy, shares his experience of the course.
Why were you interested in the course?
My interest in this course originally started when my Media Studies teacher handed out pamphlets about the BFI Film Academy in our lessons. I was interested since film production had always been something I wanted to learn more about beyond the classroom. The course I ended up taking was ‘Preparing to Work in The Film Industry’ at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, which is accredited by NCFE.
What did you think of the course?
This course was ideal since I learned about almost every aspect of film production, ranging from pre-production, critique and exhibition. The course also included a nice balance of practical and written work which guided and taught us all of the departments that make up a film.
Although this was all worthwhile, my favourite element of the course was making the film. This was one of the main reasons I applied, and it was invaluable in allowing us to gain experience in every role on set.
If someone asked me if the course was worth it, I would say 100%. This course has opened up many doors for me personally. As a BFI Film Academy Alumni, I now have access to more courses and programmes run by the BFI. Moreover, it has helped me decide what I want to pursue in film in the future.
How can I get involved?
BFI Film Academy regularly posts updates and opportunities for young people on all of their social media accounts. So if you find yourself interested, all of the info and guidance to get involved are there.
Applications close for the next course on Monday 10th October.
