7 Student Loan-Friendly Activities In Cardiff

Posted on:   Posted by:

As a third year Cardiff student, these are my top student-loan friendly days (or nights) out…

Post-freshers university life can leave you wanting to ditch nights out for a bit and go on more chilled trips with your friends. You may have also realised at this point that your student loan isn’t going to last forever! Here are a few ideas to get you started, but let me know your suggestions too!

Take a trip to the cinema…

If you want a trusty day out without the need for much planning in advance you can always count on a trip to the cinema, and it’s even better with a discount! Premiere Cinema (Capitol Centre, Queen Street) offers a discount to students with tickets priced at only £3, and they also offer a loyalty card – for every 5 films you see, you get one free!

Or take the train to the Bay…

As a student you will sometimes want to get out of the mess of your student halls and try somewhere new! Cardiff Bay has so many restaurants and bars you won’t struggle to find somewhere different to eat, or just to have a look around the Bay. Trains from Cathays are also only £3.30, making it the ideal place to go explore! There are often events held in Roald Dahl Plass, so make sure to have a look at the website before you go to see what’s going on.

Spend the day at Roath Park…

For when you’re feeling a bit active and the weather is finally looking up, Roath Park is a great place for going on a run or using the nearby recreational facilities. This can range from rugby and football pitches to the tennis courts. It’s also just a really nice place to relax after all that studying you’ve been doing. You could even have a go at one of the boat trips over the lake!

Head down to Cathays for a cheap meal and drink…

As a third year student I can safely say Cathays is the place to be for a cheap yet actually very good ‘lets just go for food and drinks’ night out, without spending half your monthly budget. Head to The Flora pub (136 Cathays Terrace) for a restaurant-quality meal and cocktails, plus some live music. Or there’s Irie Shack – the best Caribbean food and 2-4-1 drinks for a decent price, right in the middle of Cathays (106-110 Woodville Road).

Visit a Winter Wonderland…

Running from the 9th November to 7th January, Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland (outside City Hall) is the perfect place to get ready for the Christmas holidays. From an ice skating rink to the fun fair and Alpine Village, it’s such a fun, affordable place to take your friends before you leave each other for the end of term.

Experience Cardiff’s arcades…

One of my favourite things about Cardiff are the arcades. From Morgan and Royal to High Street, they are packed with cafes, restaurants, unique shops and coffee houses. You could spend ages in there exploring! Morgan Arcade is also home to the world’s oldest record shop, Spillers. Even if you don’t want to spend any cash, it’s a fun place to explore for an hour or two!
