Preview: Sunny Afternoon @ WMC

“A blazing triumph.”

“Stormingly Successful.”

“A belter! Funny, stylish and well-performed.”

These are just some of the words used to describe Sunny Afternoon, the new musical based upon both the career and the music of one of Britain’s best loved bands, The Kinks. After a year long successful run at London’s Hampstead Theatre, this Olivier Award winning musical now embarks on its first national tour of the UK.

With music by Ray Davies, once described by Pete Townshend of The Who as “almost indisputably rock’s most literate, witty and insightful songwriter”, Sunny Afternoon tells the story of the highs and lows of The Kinks career during the mid to late 60s, at time when the songs that had made them famous, You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and the titular Sunny Afternoon, were released.

Told with such stunning and fizzing energy it is a story woven with themes of sibling rivalry, untimely death, doomed love and music mismanagement, in tale of almost epic Shakespearean proportions, at the heart of which lies the brotherly love and youthful rebellion of the Davies brothers.

A truly marvellous show which will be running at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay from next Tuesday on January 17th until January 21st the Saturday after next. You are advised not to miss it.
