Match Review: Cardiff Devils vs Dundee Stars was originally published on 12th October 2015 and is by simdude101 (now under a different name!).

When our Editor, Sam mentioned that he had some ice-hockey tickets available for a couple of matches, I took them, intrigued. Before we continue this article, can I just say, I now follow ice-hockey after that match. Thanks, Sam!

I’ve played NHL 15 and 16 before, so I had a rough idea of what I could expect when I entered the stadium. However, when I walked through the doors, I felt like I could have been transported across the Atlantic, to Madison Square Garden (New York Rangers) or the BB&T Centre (Florida Panthers), although perhaps a bit smaller! It truly felt like I had been taken to America. Everything just clicked. I visited Florida last spring, and I felt like I had been taken back. There were hot dog stands, vending machines and they sold Gatorade.

The build-up to the match was insane. Lights, loud music and general excitement. It really got you stoked for the match. The hubbub in the arena created an atmosphere of tension yet expectation.

When the match began, I wasn’t sure to what to expect… but I wasn’t disappointed! Right from the offset, it was high action, high intensity and high excitement. There was something satisfying about seeing huge men fly around an ice-rink, smashing each other into the walls, whilst chasing a tiny black disc, all with the ultimate goal of hitting it into the net.

After a goal from the Dundee stars, tensions were high, as Devil’s fans egged them on to equalise. They did, during the second third, bringing the score to 1-1. The rest of the second period went without another goal, meaning that when it finished, the teams were still neck and neck. The third and final third kicked off, and it was all to play for. The devils were the first to score, allowing their fans to breathe a sigh of relief. For the first time in the game, they were ahead. The Dundee stars were quick to equalise, with a fantastic back-of-the-stick goal, bringing the teams level once again. There was one more goal to come, however. Right towards the end of the third third, the Cardiff Devils scored a brilliant backhanded goal, meaning that the score was now 3-2, and that was were it was destined to stay. The match finished 3-2, with Tomas Kurka was crowned Man of the Match.

I thoroughly enjoyed the match, and it was a great experience. I look forward to being able to sit down in that arena and watch the Devils play once again in the future.
