Welcome back lovely Sprout readers to another weekly events guide! This week the big thing is the Urdd Eisteddfod, and, our regular readers will be pleased to know, getting onto the Maes is free.
Once you’re into the Urdd things are pretty cheap too, because it’s all for young people anyway and don’t we all know too well that, for all our youthful enthusiasm and health, the one thing we don’t have is much money! So it makes sense. If you enter any of the competitions, entry to everything is free. So consider showcasing a talent of yours and reaping the rewards!
I think the Welsh Learners’ Cafe sounds like a great place to head for a cuppa if you’re in need of brushing up on your Welsh- whether you need it for a job, to ace your GCSE in Welsh, or even to impress a Welsh speaker!
Other than that, take a look here to see what’s on the Performing Stage. Wigwam, Hana2k, Chroma, I Fight Lions and more will all make appearances. Then there’s the live music stage in the WMC foyer too- see that schedule here.
It’s not the only festival this weekend- the Inside Out Festival will be taking over Bute Park. Coming in at over the £50 mark, it’s not cheap, but if you’re more into your grime from Hannah Wants to Bugzy Malone, it might be the place to be.
THURSDAY 30 MAY
Get on down to that hostel by the river, it’s the NosDa Spoken Word Open Mic. From 8pm you can spit your finest rhymes and have the best of times. Book of face for the human race here.
FRIDAY 31 MAY
Probably the highlight of the Urdd calendar, it’s the Gigs Nos, or evening gigs. Rock up in the Bay on Friday and Saturday for the grand price of, er, zero! This is where you’ll be able to see aforementioned Welsh faves like Chroma and Wigwam.
If you’re looking for something different, maybe Chaos in the CBD at Kong’s is more your bag for evening entertainment. That one can be seen on FB and Eventbrite. This one can cost up to £15 though, so might not count as cheap. I just like the name, to be honest.
Blue Honey Night Cafe is moving into the old home of Milgi, so the vegan cafe-bar vibes can continue. The launch of Blue Honey Local, as they’re calling it, continues all weekend. From 6pm on Friday, the Grand Opening features DJs and (all vegan, I believe) menu samples. FB event.
SATURDAY 1 JUNE
The Repair Cafe is back once again at 10am in Cathays’ Salvation Army Hall to help you fix your stuff. Check it out here.
From 2pm, head down to the Global Gardens community project where you can have a look around at the “Have a Grow” Open Day. There will be tea, cake and herbs, and it is free entry but consider a donation. FB event.
Hold down A once the 2 starts to fade, it’s the Mario Kart Charity Tourney at Arcade Vaults. From 5-9pm showcase your snaking skills amongst some of Cardiff’s biggest hard men (when it comes to Rainbow Road). It’ll cost you about £5 to enter. FB event.
From 7-11pm it’s Prom Queen Social Club’s first birthday. Celebrate “a year of slams, skates and sisterhood” at the women only skateboarding event from 8pm on Saturday at Spit & Sawdust. FB here, get tickets for £10 or less here.
SUNDAY 2 JUNE
From 10-2, get down the Farmers’ Market for The Big Lunch, a Lottery funded project that asks neighbours to share lunch with each other. There will be music and street food. Event here.
Pretty sure we only just had a duck race, but this one is in Roath Park and it is in aid of HCPT, who send children to the Christian shrine in Europe, Lourdes. However this one is only £1 a duck, so, maybe get two or three ducks. 12 o clock in the Park- Facebook, JustGiving for buying ducks.
MONDAY 3 JUNE
A special one you won’t see anywhere else online: recently up at the EVI (another project from ProMo-Cymru, who run The Sprout), we met Dr Rich Haesly from California, who is asking people how they view their national identity in a 60-90 minute questionnaire. At Cathays Community Centre from 10am-2pm, he will ask you for your views and pay you £10 afterwards! Could be good…
TUESDAY 4 JUNE
I always see stories on Reddit’s GameTales of Dungeons and Dragons, the famous roleplaying game, and I always want to play but never have. Maybe now is the time, with Learn to Play DnD at the Gate, in association with Cardiff board game maestros Rules of Play. It’s from 6:30pm and no cost is mentioned. FB here.
Bub’s Pub Quiz is on again in the centre of town at Beelzebub’s pub. The season’s winner wins a £200 hamper so well worth it. It starts at 8pm. FB event.
WEDNESDAY 5 JUNE
Ride My Bike Cafe’s got an event on for anyone worried about the decline in biodiversity across the world. Bees, whilst they may be scary for some, are really harmless to humans, really important for pollinating plants, and really cute and fuzzy to boot. Hear talks from bee experts from 6:30pm. It’s part of Wales Nature Week, and can be seen on FB here.
