YMCA Cardiff have won a Youth Excellence Award for the good work of their Child Sexual Exploitation Steering Group, including an animated video produced by ProMo-Cymru (which also publishes TheSprout).

It’s a really important topic that deserves to get more airtime. Read below for a full explanation and, of course, the video. If you or someone you know has been affected by Child Sexual Exploitation, please contact one of the services linked at the end of this article.

The Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Steering Group was established through Cardiff Children’s Services to help tackle exploitation and develop closer working relationships between statutory agencies such as police, education, health and third sector organisations. The purpose of the twelve month project was to gain the young people’s views on the support they have received to improve current services for victims of Child Sexual Exploitation. This is an emotive project so therefore it was important to balance out the sensitive subjects with fun activities of the young people’s choice. This helped to keep the young people engaged in the project and enabled them to build positive trusting relationships between the youth workers and other young people.

The aim of the project was to gather the information and data through a range of creative mediums, resulting in a resource video about Child Sexual Exploitation to be used by professionals and young people. The creative video has being made in partnership with ProMo Cymru, the young people attended sessions with the team. The young people have written the script, completed voice recordings and directed the animation work. The young people explored their thoughts and feelings through creative pieces of art such as; pottery, canvas painting, hammer beading, jar painting and a ‘my life/what I like’ montage.

This video resource is to promote the learning of young people and professionals around the subject of Child Sexual Exploitation. The video was created by young people who were victims of Child Sexual Exploitation in the City Of Cardiff.

The project was nominated for the Youth Excellence Awards and came first in the category ‘Promoting Young People’s Rights’.

If you are affected by any of the issues in this video or have any questions please get in contact with the ThinkSafe! Team, the Police, or SHOT: Healthy Relationship Service at the YMCA Cardiff.
