67 talented young athletes from Cardiff will benefit from a £42,000 fund thanks to leisure charitable social enterprise GLL, who manage Cardiff’s Better Leisure Centres on behalf of Cardiff Council.
The local athletes will be supported through the GLL Sport Foundation, the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK, which this year marks its 10th year of supporting today’s and tomorrow’s athletes.
The award
Supported athletes will receive award packages that include financial grants of up to £1,250, free training memberships to use Cardiff leisure centre facilities and across 300 GLL and partner operated sporting venues. They will also benefit from access to sports science, medical support and employment opportunities all focussed towards supporting their athlete journey.
Chloe Tutton
Chloe Tutton, 21 from Grangetown, who recently won a bronze medal in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, receives an Ambassador Award.
Chloe said on receiving her award:
“My main goal now is to compete and medal at The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics but along the way, I have a number of sporting competitions to compete in, such as The European Championships in the summer.
“Receiving this award from the GLL Sport Foundation helps me massively as I’m a 21 year old moving to a new senior programme. Moving away from home is a huge step especially when relying on such little funding provided by the sport itself to cater for living arrangements, food, and training needs. It would really take some weight off the shoulders knowing I have that bit extra that I can put towards a better life style so I can concentrate on getting better swimming results.”
Rhydian Castle
One of the youngest recipients is Rhydian Castle aged 11, a pupil at Ysgol Glantaf. Rhydian started playing squash at Fairwater Leisure Centre at the end of last year and now absolutely loves the sport and plays up to eight hours of squash a week. He attends the Squash Wales Academy Squad at Sophia Gardens and has started winning medals. He is an exceptional player and the grant will help him achieve his aspirations for his future in this sport.
Rhydian said:
“The grant from the GLL Sport Foundation will help me to carry on putting in as much time and effort into the sport and enable me to compete both in this country and abroad in the future.”
Elinor Snowsill
One of last year’s recipients was Welsh Rugby Union player Elinor Snowsill from Radyr, Cardiff. She also receives an Ambassador Award this year. Elinor has 48 caps for Wales including three World Cups and eight 6 Nation Tournaments. She was recently a member of the Commonwealth Games 7’s training squad.
Elinor, who recently returned from Brisbane, commented:
“I am very grateful for the support I, and many others receive from the GLL Sport Foundation. It is a constant challenge to balance the demands of being a high performance athlete with working or studying full time, and foundations like GLL help to alleviate some of the challenges that arise during this time.
“Competing at the recent Commonwealth Games was the pinnacle of my career so far, and I returned from Australia determined to inspire and support future athletes. It is a very exciting time to be a part of Welsh sport!”
Juliette Dickinson
Juliette Dickinson, GLL Regional Director for Wales, commented:
“The wealth of young sporting talent within Cardiff’s local communities is truly inspiring. We believe that the vast majority of the athletes that benefit from the GLL Sport Foundation will give something back to sport and society in a positive way; whether as a future champion inspiring the nation, sports coach, volunteer, fund raiser or as an inspirational role model to other young people to get active and involved in sport”.
