Spotlight on Women is a segment of The Future Is Feminist campaign. It aims to highlight women that young people in Cardiff think are inspirational and deserve more recognition.

About Irina Sebrova

Irina Sebrova was born in Russia on Christmas Day (25th December) 1914 and died on 5th March 2000.

Why is Irina Sebrova famous?

Irina served in the world’s first all-female air force bomber squadron.

Why is Irina Sebrova an inspiration to you?

Her bravery, courage and actions meant she survived the war and helped the allies win.

Irina Sebrova is an inspiration because she broke the stereotype at the time of all women being housewives. She also did one of the hardest things ever at the time (flight commander) and flew roughly 850 sorties throughout World War II. No one could ever have pictured a woman doing the job at the time! She also fought against fear and gave hope to people at a time when it was needed the most.

Why does Irina Sebrova deserve more recognition?

Not many people know about the Night Witches (first all-female air force bomber crew), and everyone thinks women only got recognition in the latter half of the 20th century, when that’s false!

The Night Witches were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union award after her first 825 bombing runs against the axis.
