First Trip To The Theatre Post-Lockdown: The Book Of Mormon @ WMC

Posted on:   Posted by:

As a theatre lover, I’ve missed seeing my favourite musicals on stage. After my experience watching The Book of Mormon at Wales Millennium Centre, it’s now become one of my favourites!

On the 12th of October, the highly acclaimed musical ‘The Book of Mormon’ started its UK tour in Cardiff for the first time since the pandemic began.

Navigating the “new normal”

With everything that’s happened over the last 2 years, going back to the theatre was something I felt unsure about. With no rules on social distancing, me and my partner were nervous about going into a room with nearly 2,500 people.

As we arrived at the Wales Millennium Centre, we felt more assured by seeing posters asking people to wear masks. Even though it wasn’t mandatory, most people were wearing them out of respect which really helped settle our nerves. The excitement in the building was the best feeling as we all hadn’t been to see a show for a while. It was a great chance to meet new people who also love the theatre.

The electric ambiance

As we went to our seats, we felt some nerves sitting as there was no social distancing but once we sat down, we felt the normality we haven’t felt for a very long time. The sound of everyone chatting, laughing, and having a catch up with friends was lovely to see. It felt electric. Once the orchestra began to play, the theatre fell quiet as we were finally going to watch a musical live for the first time in 2 years!

Exceeding expectations

I had only ever heard good things about The Book of Mormon. Having not heard a song or anything about the storyline, I came to the show with no idea what to expect. I was blown away by the funny story and catchy songs that kept me smiling and crying with laughter throughout the show. The time flew by and the show of 2 hours felt like only 30 minutes. I guess it’s true that time flies when you’re having fun!

The actors in The Book of Mormon were brilliant but the singing was even better! The set and lighting was so creative and always entertaining for the eye. There was so much tiny detail that the production put into their work to make it the best possible show. To end the show, the cast were given a standing ovation which was very well deserved. I wish we could have had an encore of the whole show!

Theatre is back, baby!

When leaving the theatre, I was smiling with joy as it felt like normality was finally back. I was so blessed that I was able to start the return of the shows with such an amazing production. I feel much more comfortable with going back to the theatre now and I can’t wait to see my next show!
