2021 has been a busy year for TheSprout! Let’s recap the 5 campaigns that went live during the last year.
#YouDeserve Healthy Relationships
Relationships can be really fulfilling and enjoyable but they can sometimes be confusing and hard to navigate when things go wrong. No matter whether it be with your friends, romantic partner or family members, #YouDeserve to have healthy relationships.
Throughout the #YouDeserve campaign, 6 young people in Cardiff took a deep dive into the differences between healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships.
The Future Is Feminist
The Future is Feminist was a two-week campaign created for TheSprout in collaboration with young people part of the Young Creators from Cardiff Youth service.
The idea of The Future Is Feminist campaign stemmed from conversations with young people during the disappearance and murder of Sarah Everard in March 2021. In the wake of these events, there was lots of attention on social media and in the news about women’s safety. Questions such as ‘why was she walking around alone at night?’ and ‘what was she wearing?’ were thrown around to try to make sense of the terrible events that were unravelling before us. Comments such as these are problematic, to say the least.
From this, young people across Cardiff joined together to discuss important related issues such as women’s rights, empowerment, safety, and equality. The group worked together to create content for a campaign to raise awareness of the issues still facing women today and campaign for change!
Summer of Smiles: What Does It Mean To Be a Young Cardiffian?
As part of the Summer of Smiles festival in Cardiff during the summer of 2021, young creatives aged between 14-18 were given the opportunity to get involved in an art commission. 7 young people received £300, plus expenses for materials and equipment, to create a piece of art about what it meant to be a young person living in Cardiff.
The young people had 3 weeks to create the art from concept to finished piece. The finished pieces were then exhibited during the final week of the Summer of Smiles main festival site with the young artists proudly showing off their work.
The campaign was produced with help from a paid young journalist who interviewed all the artists to ask them about their inspiration, the meaning of their work, and how they found the experience.
Postcards From The Future
Ever wondered what the future will be like in 50 years time? Young people have risen to the challenge by illustrating their vision of the future for Chapter’s 50th Birthday.
Chapter invited young people aged 5-16 from Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil to enter a competition. The challenge was to send themselves a postcard from an imagined future, 50 years from now.
After receiving 1,200 submissions from 17 different schools, Chapter worked with an expert panel of judges to make the difficult decision of picking the top three from each age group. Following this, an online public vote took place to select one winner, Anna Hughes, whose postcard was displayed in Chapter’s Lightbox for 6 months!
See all the 9 finalists works and their artist interviews in the Postcards From The Future campaign.
