Want to make a difference in your local community? UpRising are calling out to ambitious 19-25 year olds in Cardiff!

Award-winning youth charity UpRising is calling out to ambitious 19-25 year olds from Cardiff and the Vale to join their flagship Leadership & Social Action Programme. UpRising is a UK-wide youth charity, recognised for championing important issues surrounding diversity, social mobility and equality.

Their mission is to create the leaders of tomorrow, who will truly reflect and represent the communities that they serve. Now thanks to a pioneering partnership between UpRising and BBC Cymru Wales, Cardiff Council, Cardiff University and University of South Wales, the charity will boost the skills, confidence, knowledge and social capital of 90 young people, across two years, through their flagship Leadership Programme.

Applications for the Cardiff Programme are now open. UpRising Cymru are on the lookout for 19-25 year olds who live, work or study in Cardiff, have bags of enthusiasm and a desire to make positive change. To apply visit: www.uprising.org.uk/apply

Applications close on 7th October and the Programme starts later that month with a residential weekend. The free to attend 9-month, part-time Programme gives young people exclusive behind the scenes access to Cardiff’s most powerful and influential businesses, voluntary and public organisations.

They will get the opportunity to meet senior leaders, run their own social action campaign in their community and be coached and mentored by those in the know. Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director, BBC Cymru Wales adds: “I’ve seen at first hand Uprising’s ability to inspire people from a wide range of backgrounds to make a real difference in their communities and in their working lives. BBC Wales is excited by this fantastic opportunity to work with Uprising to develop the new generation of leaders for Wales and beyond – and I’m thrilled that so many partners from across south Wales are coming together to support this bold and ambitious Programme”.

UpRising delivered a pilot Leadership Programme in Cardiff City Region in 2016 where 36 young people from across the City’s diverse and underrepresented communities, including Butetown, Grangetown, Ely, Riverside and Cathays, took part. Lucy Caldicott, Chief Executive of UpRising said, 1 “I’m delighted to be re-launching UpRising in Cardiff and the Vale following our successful pilot. Our Programme offers a real opportunity for young people to be supported by the most senior leaders in their area and to become true leaders themselves. The Programme is hugely effective across the UK with many young people coming back to tell us how it has changed their lives”.

‘UpRiser’, Chris Ohanyan, a Syrian refugee living in Cardiff took part in the Pilot and explains how the Programme has benefitted him, “It was such a great experience. I have been able to learn so much about Cardiff and how business operates here. UpRising has motivated me and helped me learn how to be a good leader and work in a team. I want to continue to develop for my future career.”

UpRisers attended sessions and workshops with organisations and leaders such as Principality Building Society, Unite the Union, BAWSO, Wales Millennium Centre, Stonewall Cymru, Julie James AM, Minister for Skills and Science, Welsh Government; Cynthia Ogbonna, Managing Director, Cardiff Bus and Councillor Phil Bale, former Leader of Cardiff City Council.

Previous Leadership Programme Alumni from across the UK have gone onto roles as CEOs, political candidates and creating and running their own organisations, charities and small businesses. You can support the important work that UpRising charity does, by donating as little as £5 a month.

Visit www.UpRising.org.uk/donate to see how you can start supporting the leaders of tomorrow. We’re also looking for venue space, volunteering as a speaker or mentor.
