Get Involved: Youth Takeover @ New Theatre

Sub-Editor’s note: We’ve updated the article – please see below.

Are you aged 14 to 25 and interested in the arts? Fancy a free opportunity to hone your skills with industry experts? Then here’s an opportunity for you this August!

The New Theatre is hosting a youth takeover in partnership with six leading Welsh organisations in the arts in order to create a large-scale professional production debuting on 6th August. However, there are several ways to get involved.

You can be involved as a performer with training starting on 1st August. Experts will be training participants in all different art forms, including dance, visual art, acting, spoken word, circus and song over an intensive week-long programme.

One of the artists getting involved is Sophie McKeand, the Young People’s Poet Laureate of Wales, who will be working alongside artists and experts from Arts Active, Literature Wales, Community Music Wales, Criw Celf, Earthfall and NoFit State circus.

The show itself is being directed by the award-winning James Williams (Flown, Hitch, My Life in CIA), with workshops being held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

How to get involved:

You can also be involved in the behind-the-scenes work through the curating pathway, as there is a meeting on 28th July to discuss volunteering around the event. Whether you have a creative side outside of performing, such as blogging, filming or photography or want to help out on the admin, research or marketing side, they are willing to tailor the experience around you. [UPDATE: Sorry, applications to perform are now closed, but you can still take part in this amazing event by going along and watching – see below.]

The project itself is being managed by Arts Active, the Cardiff-based arts education charity, and these opportunities are being offered completely free of charge, you just need to book your performance ticket at Eventbrite. Or, check out more general information at the Art Active website or their Facebook or their Twitter page.

The aim is to create an experimental, genre-defying show, so if you aren’t a performer of any sort but enjoy watching exciting new theatre,  you can buy tickets for the resulting show on 6th August here and help support local artists and young performers. It is being billed as a breathtaking experience, so get involved if you have the chance!
