Free And Cheap Things To Do In Cardiff: 20-27 July 2018

For many young people in Cardiff this is the last week of school. Which means next week has to get filled with everything you dreamed of doing whilst you were cooped up in those stuffy classrooms all summer.

We reckon The Sprout can help. Welcome to our choice of cheap and free things to do in the city during the next 7 days.

The Drones Comedy Club

20 July 9pm – Chapter Arts Centre – £3.50

Chapter’s twice monthly comedy night is back! Tickets are a measly £3.50, which makes it one of the cheapest nights out in the city. There will as always be top-notch comedians on the bill, so head on down to Canton town. Get your tickets here.

Sherman 5 Stories

21 July 10.30-17.00 – Sherman Theatre – Free

For the past five years, the Sherman Theatre has been running a program called Sherman 5. They invite people from disadvantaged backgrounds into the theatre. Free transport, a free first show and lots of discounts are offered. This Saturday there will be a whole day of free events celebrating the programme’s fifth anniversary. Ten short films will screen documenting the progress of notable participants, as well as a photography exhibition. Further information available through the Sherman.

Introduction to Permaculture

21 July 10.30-16.30 – Global Gardens Cardiff – Free

Did you know Cardiff has its very own global garden? Furthermore, did you know we have a Permaculture Network? Personally, I don’t really know what those things mean, but it sounds like a good excuse to get a bit of dirt on your hands. The event promises edible gardening- that means a free lunch! Tickets are free on Eventbrite.

Open Air Theatre: King Lear

Sunday July 22nd 8pm – Sophia Gardens – £8 (under 18)

If you’re heading into sixth form in September, why not start your A-Level English revision early by watching the Everyman Youth Theatre production of King Lear? The Facebook page for this event promises an “abridged version of the classic” (that means it’s shorter). What better way to enjoy the summer than watching a man gouge his own eyes out on stage?

Underwater Wonders

23-26 July – Newport Wetlands – £5.50

Does pond-dipping sound up your alley? What if I said it involves using an underwater camera? That sounds cool, doesn’t it? Get pictures of fish and all the other subterranean wildlife that lurks just below the surface of Newport’s expansive wetlands. Further information on the RSPB website.

And finally…

If you just want to hang out on some vintage seaside rides, the Capital FM Bay Beach Festival is still on. If you’ve got a little more cash to spend and want to get fit, why not try out Boulders’ summer holiday events, where you can learn to climb in a day for £15 (equipment included). And don’t forget to grab your tickets for Pride Cymru’s Big Weekend in August.

Have a great week!
