Film Review: Rogue One : A Star Wars Story @ VUE Cardiff

‘Rogue One : A Star Wars Story’

Released: Thursday 15th of December

After the success of ‘The Force Awakens’ last year, which was a direct carry on from where ‘Return of the Jedi’ left off 32 years previously, Rogue One’ was a highly anticipated feature film.

Whereas ‘The Force Awakens’ focused on the events after the ‘Return of the Jedi’, ‘Rogue One’ is focused on the interlude between ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope’. In particular, it focuses on how the Rebel alliance came into possession of the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s new superweapon.

When I first heard about the film, I was concerned as to how good it would actually be. I had been disappointed with ‘The Force Awakens’, as I felt there was a lot of plot similarities between the original films. However, ‘Rogue One’ did not fall into this pothole like its predecessor. The plot felt fresh and exciting, with the right balance of action scenes to engage the viewer for the entire running length.  The film still includes classic Star Wars concepts, like jumping into Hyperspace, and this allows the film to feel new and improved, whilst still including aspects of the old films that audiences know and love. A fleeting glimpse of Princess Leia, which hints at the storyline of ‘A New Hope’, further compliments this.

The film has superb special effects. The filmmakers behind the film have created a film that looks and feels like the original films. However, the modern technology used compliments this, creating a far more immersive experience.

The cast of ‘Rogue One’ displayed a fantastic performance. Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, the main character, was fantastic, and her performance was complimented by Diego Luna, who played Captain Cassian Andor, Erso’s main companion in the film. Their performances were supported by many others, including Donnie Yen, who played Chirrut Imwe, and Jiang wen, who played Baze Malbus.

The filmmakers have created an atmosphere throughout the film that keeps viewers engaged its entire duration. The viewer is kept on the edge of their seat, and this only enhances the effect of the film.

I really enjoyed ‘Rogue One’. Despite my initial concerns, I was not left disappointed. The filmmakers have created a fitting film to compliment the original films. I would highly recommend that you go and watch ‘Rogue One : A Star Wars Story’.

The film is out in all cinemas now.
