Butetown carnival, which restarted four years ago after a hiatus, took place on August 28th and 29th. The fun filled event included a live show made up of the most talented performers, great music ranging from jazz to pop to reggae and food that was to die for.
The parade started off at Loudoun Square and made its way down to Canal Park where all the community got together for a huge celebration full of fun activities. The day started off bright and warm (until the light rain decided to make an appearance) but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits.
There were many different stalls where you could buy a range of things like wacky toys, delicate gifts of a selection of stylish sunglasses. Me and my cousin Aalya particularly enjoyed the Roald Dahl sweet shop where we were able to choose many delicious candies completely free of charge, and we got to learn more information about the great writer.
We also enjoyed some tasty savoury snacks from Mr.Twister, which were absolutely delicious (I personally recommend the pizza flavour; that seemed to be the crowds favourite too.) We then stopped by a stall that was displaying and educating people on healthy alternatives to meat, we tried some mealworms (that’s right mealworms ) but surprisingly they weren’t actually that bad; it took some convincing but I also got my family to try some too.
However, it wasn’t just the food the was good ,the live performances including Nadia, Messiah Dub Club and young dancers from the Jukebox Collective (to name just a few) were are absolutely great, they had the whole community up and dancing. Overall, Butetown carnival was a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly! You could truly feel the love and sense of community in the atmosphere.
I can’t wait for the next one!
