Wednesday 28th September 2017

Wednesday 28th September was a big date – it was the date of the album launch for Broke, the debut album of Cardiff-based group Astroid Boys.

Following the release of their two EPs, Bacon Dream and CF10, Broke is the first long play to be released by the group and it was very, very hotly anticipated.
Where there’s Astroid Boys, their crew ain’t too far away and provided the most stellar support. Among the fantastic warm up acts was the infamous Sonny Double 1. He’s by far one of the finest grime artists to come out of the Grangetown (“I said I started from CF11/ that be the sh*t that I’m repping”) area, perhaps most famous for his single Mo Farah but also for his appearance on Foreigners with Astroid Boys.

Mace from Splott also provided support, and truly shut down Clwb Ifor Bach when he played his famous It’s Mad, shot all in and around the Splott area.

Astroid Boys were as magnificent as you would have imagined.

The show was live, Benji and Phil spat fire and the actual sound quality of the live show was incredibly high. They played some of their older songs and some from their new album, Broke and were full of energy.

Towards the end of their set in a true homage to the jungle and drum ‘n’ bass heritage and culture of the city, everything got mashed up and it felt like “proper” Cardiff. Or, at least the most Cardiff event I’d been to in years with MCs such as Mace joining them on the mic before the entire crowd was emergency evacuated as they exceeded their curfew.

If this what an Astroid Boys gig looks like in Clwb in the city centre, what would it look like in CF10, CF5 or CF24? Let’s see…
