Preview: Wiley @ Y Plas

This February 5th kicks off the first date of grime trailblazer Wiley’s 2017 tour at Y Plas, Cardiff presented by Clwb Ifor Bach. 2016 was a big year for grime music: it was also a big year for Boy Better Know Records as grime saw a huge resurgence in the UK. 2017 looks to be a similar affair.

Signed to Boy Better Know Records alongside Skepta, JME and most recently Canadian rap artist Drake, Wiley, actually helped found Boy Better Know Records. The MC has recently dropped his 11th album called The Godfather; a reference to his title as “the godfather of grime” owing to his pioneering tracks such as “Wearing my Rolex” and “Can You Hear Me?”. Wiley is one of a handful of artists who single handedly evolved garage into grime. He’s also released numerous mixtapes and EP’s, along with famous instrumentals like Eskimo.

The Godfather has been released to critical acclaim across the board- and that’s not a mistake. Single P Money was dropped in 2015, leaving fans hungry for the album that was eventually released on 17th January 2017: over a year later. It has received four stars on the Guardian and five stars from NME.

With support from local group Astroid Boys and grime artist President T, Wiley will take to the stage for his only Welsh date at Y Plas, Cardiff on February 5th.

Tickets are £18.50 and it’s going to be one of the sickest grime events of the year.
