Never Give In: Artist Exclusive With Paolo Bini

Paolo, a 13-year-old artist, used Minecraft to create art about different emotions.

This article is part of the Never Give In campaign, where 21 young Cardiffians were commissioned to create a piece of art showing how gaming affects their mental health. This is the story of Paolo, a 13-year-old artist who was part of the project.

How has gaming affected your mental health?

I mostly play Minecraft. As soon as I open Minecraft, I feel calm and in control. It’s the one thing I am good at. Sometimes I find real-life things difficult but when I’m playing Minecraft, I find it easy and fun.

I like Minecraft because while I’m playing it, I’m not thinking about real-life issues as I’m 100% focused on the game. I love building worlds, playing, or just chatting to friends. I find it a lot easier to make friends on Minecraft because I feel freer to be myself. Building on Minecraft feels like I am free to express myself, which I think is good for my mental health.

What inspired you to create this artwork?

Everyone has thoughts but you cannot see them. This piece of art is about being able to see people’s thoughts and the different emotions people may feel. As you can see, the girl is sitting on a planet and you can see all of her thoughts.

This build is set in a space theme to make it more interesting. Each different planet also represents different emotions. I like how the different colours symbolise different emotions.

When I think of mental health I think about how people are feeling and their thoughts, which also inspired me.

What message would you give to someone who is struggling with their mental health?

You might feel this way now but it won’t be like this forever. One day your life will be amazing. Remember that you are yourself and don’t let anyone change who you are!
