Free and Cheap Things to Do in Cardiff: end of Dec 2018

It’s Christmas party season here in Cardiff, and you’ll be seeing people far older than the usual student crowd out for a good time- frankly, it’s embarrassing. Mum, I don’t want to know what you and the girls from the office got up to at Jury’s Inn!

Whether you’re avoiding the merry crowds or looking for something to do that’s not just MORE Christmas shopping, don’t worry. As we have done for the last six months (Has it been that long already?) the Sprout has your back with our roundup of the cheap events of the next few weeks…

Immersed at Tramshed

Thurs 13 Dec midday onwards – Tramshed – £5

I D E A L S E L F

In aid of Teenage Cancer Trust Tramshed are hosting a festival of VR tech, live music and gaming tournaments. Basically, just a fun day for a good cause. Facebook / Eventbrite

Fun at the Flute

Thurs 13 Dec 7.30-10.30pm – The Flute and Tankard – £5

Macintyre’s final 2018 Sprout appearance

Leroy Brito, who you have almost certainly seen from some HILARIOUS sketches on BBC SESH, and now the new BBC TV program about the Welsh tourism industry, Tourist Trap, is headlining a stand up night at the Flute and Tankard. The tickets are £5, the weather looks good, and the pub looks warm. What have you got to lose? Facebook / Ticketsource

Arcade Vaults Arcade Cafe

Fri 14 Dec 7.30pm-10.30pm – The Gate – £3.50

Not retro enough?

If you love retro games the arcade vault has always been the place to be, but this time there’s a super special VR set up too. If you love your gaming, get down to the Arcade Cafe. More info on Facebook and tickets straight out the Gate.

Christmas at Cardiff Castle Underground Cinema

Sun 16 Dec all day (plus Mon and Tues afternoons) – £5 a film

You’ll be under that, phwoarrr

Tickets are selling out pretty fast for this family friendly Christmas film extravaganza in the basement of the Castle. Don’t have a Nightmare- get yours now. Facebook for info.

Boy Azooga Christmas Knees Up

Tuesday 18 Dec 8pm til late – Blue Honey Night Cafe – Probably free?

Pic: Green Man fest by @tudir

What a year it’s been for Boy Azooga- undoubtedly the breakout Welsh band of 2018, even in a year with strong contenders like Al Moses, Estrons, Junior Bill, and the million-stream-makers Alffa. A very cool and casual facebook event appeared in our feeds with promise of “a snog from Scott” underneath the mistletoe. Goodness me, the scandal. Mark yourself as Going so Mark Zuckerberg knows exactly what you’re into.

Funny Fuel December

Thursday 20 Dec 8.30-11.30pm – FUEL Rock Club – Free!

Couldn’t use the Mike pic twice

Ah yes, Funny and Free Fuel with Frank Foucault. (That’s quite enough F Words- Ed.) Jokes aside Frank is amazingly funny and you owe it to yourself to see his show. Facebook.

Mariah Carey’s Clwb Christmas Cracker

Friday 21 Dec 11pm-4am – Clwb Ifor Bach – £5

She don’t care about these.

All she wants for Christmas is youuuuu. YOUUUU. YOOoOUuUUUUU. The best festive club night I could find. Fiver entry. I will… not see you there. Sorry Mariah. Facebook and Eventbrite.

From me at the events desk of The Sprout, I hope you have a great (and possibly mindful and eco friendly) Christmas, and feel refreshed and ready to take on 2019!

In the new year, watch out for:
