Free and Cheap Things to Do in Cardiff: 27 Sep- 3 Oct

Freshers’ fortnight rages on, school is in full flow and workers are back to work. Things are ticking over, maybe people are saving for their next big break. Which means they’ll be looking for what’s free and what’s cheap this week in Cardiff!

It’s not that hard to find something to do this week, actually- maybe it’s because the students are back in town, but this week I found so many events I would have been here til next week just listing them all. Here are some of the best I spotted- but honestly if you just stroll around town, especially near the universities, you’ll probably stumble across a ton of interesting things to do.

Grange Comedy

27 Sep 7.30pm-10:30pm – Grange Pub – Free

The Grange, an independent pub in, er, Grangetown, hosts its first comedy night. It’s free, and features comedians you may recognize from the massively popular BBC Sesh. Facebook has the details.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 2018

28 Sep 10am-12pm – Starts at Cardiff Castle – Free

An event run by Cardiff’s Cadwyn Housing Association in which men wear women’s shoes and walk a mile to raise awareness of issues faced by women such as domestic violence and sexual assault. Read more on Facebook.

HOYFest x CALM Welcome Party

28 Sep 6-Late – Moon – Free, donations welcome

This weekend, as well as everything else, is HOYfest, a huge music festival based in and around Womanby Street. The main event is in Clwb all weekend but kick it all off with this chilled cheap starter course at the Moon. In aid of Campaign Against Living Miserably, donate here and read more on Facebook.

JAMMIND mental health game jam

28-30 Sep starting 4:30pm – Cardiff Uni – Free

This event may be free but you will need to write off your weekend, bring your best game design skills and get ready to cooperate with some of the world’s finest neuroscientist minds to create games which explore mental health, that great crisis of our times. There does seem to be food provided though, so that should be good. Book it on Eventbrite.

Mental Health

Open Doors: Glamorgan Archives

29 Sep 10am-2pm – Glamorgan Archives (nr Cardiff City grounds) – Free

The Glamorgan Archives is a huge building full of the old records of Cardiff and the surrounding counties, situated right next to Cardiff City’s stadium. As the Open Doors programme winds down, the Archives’ open day will focus on Wales’ coal history.

The Big Cardiff Social Run

30 Sep 10am-12pm – The Grangetown Pavilion – Free

It’s a social run, but it IS 10k, so it’s certainly no beginners run. I guess you run just fast enough so you can talk to each other. Should be fun- and the weather is looking decent. Book on Eventbrite.

First Thursday: Oct 2018

4 Oct 7.30pm – Chapter Arts – £3

Seren, the Welsh publisher, hosts an amazing night of poetry and literature. Not to be missed (which is why it’s listed a whole week early). Info here– pay on the door.
