Channel 4: Looking 4Talent

C4 Pop Up is a series of networking events for young people between the ages of 16-25 who are passionate about the media industry. Each year, 4Talent organises five Pop Ups in five different cities across the UK to make sure every young person looking for a chance to showcase their talent has an opportunity to do so.

This year, one of the Pop Ups took place in Chapter, Cardiff, on the 18th of August. Anya Jenkins went to C4 Pop Up Cardiff to volunteer and help to make sure everything went smoothly throughout the day. She also attended the Journalism workshop.

Here is a little photo-insight from her trip into the C4 Pop Up Cardiff, as well as some info for Sprouters that might want to further get involved with Channel 4 programme, 4Talent or just want to get more experience in the media world.

Over a hundred young people attended the workshops, such as Journalism, TV Production and Digital Marketing, and about 20 of them won the chance to take part in the national-scale C4 event in London!

Opportunities

Channel 4 Pop Ups

Do you have little to no experience but are curious about the media industry? Come to this one-day event, participate in one of the workshops and test your talent at C4 Pop Up. Channel 4 is holding five events of this kind throughout the year, locations all across the UK.

Work experience

For those who want “a taste of what it’s like to work in the media industry”. A week-long placement with Channel 4: you’ll be doing anything from Marketing to Commissioning to Online and Information Systems. Plus, of course, valuable contacts and networking opportunities.

Apprenticeships

Strictly for non-degree holders, as this is an alternative route to University. A long placement of 12 months of intense training and working experience within Channel 4 (various departments), but you get to show that you have a spark to get in.

Production training Scheme

For those over 18, looking for a career in production. Another year-long placement with a chance to receive training and mentoring at Channel 4. Past trainees got “stuck” in the industry thanks to this one and have successfully worked as researchers, production coordinators, assistant editors etc.

Graduate programme

Channel 4 also offers an MA in Creative Media Leadership at Bournemouth Uni, completed with hands-on experience and networking opportunities from Channel 4.

4Crew

This one is advertised as a top talent-searching scheme. 4Crew is a team of a reporter, director, production coordinator and a social networker that travels around the country with Channel 4, documenting all the events and news related to the Channel. If you’re lucky to be one of the four, you’ll get a professional freelance experience, mentoring and training from Channel 4, and an amazing opportunity to be a part of an independent production industry. One crew is chosen each year.

4Screenwriting

This scheme offers 12 positions to creative writers with ideas for stories that would look good on TV. If you want to know how to turn a story into great television drama – consider applying and spending your weekends and evenings throughout the year with Channel 4.
