Support for LGBTQ+ Young People in Cardiff

This blog is part of the Cardiff Pride: More Than A Month campaign. It shares information about local and national support services in Cardiff that LGBTQ+ young people can go for support, advice, and guidance in a safe space.

LGBTQ+ groups in Cardiff

Umbrella Allies 

Umbrella Allies is an LGBTQ+ youth club run by Cardiff Youth Service at Eastmoors Youth Centre in Cardiff. It is open to all 11-25’s in the area. The group meets every Friday from 6:15-8:15pm.

Impact 

Impact is an LGBTQ+ youth group which meets every Tuesday between 5-7pm in the bingo hall at Cathays Community Centre. It’s a friendly and safe environment which allows you to become friends with like-minded people while socialising, playing sports, doing arts & crafts, taking part in workshops and sometimes trips out and residentials. This group is mainly aimed towards 13-21 year olds. Each session costs £1.

Glitter Cymru 

Glitter Cymru is a meet-up group for Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) people who are LGBTQ+. They run meetups every Saturday from 2-3pm on Zoom. It is for all ages. Contact Glitter Cymru on social media for more details.

Constellation

Constellation, run by the Amber project, is a weekly workshop for trans young people aged 12-16 and 17-25 in central Cardiff. The project offers support with emotional well-being, with a free counselling service and practical support. Cardiff Foxes

Cardiff Foxes are an LGBTQ+ running group for all ages. They meet at 10:15am by Pettigrew Tea Rooms on Sunday mornings, for a social 5K run that begins at 10:30am. There’s a post-run social usually held at the Queer Emporium or Pettigrew Tea Rooms.

Cardiff Baseliners

Cardiff Baseliners are Wales’ first LGBTQ+ inclusive tennis club. They host a social every Saturday between 12-2pm at Heath Park. All ages are welcome.

Projects and opportunities

Trans*form – Youth Cymu

Trans*form is a 3-year project aiming to improve understanding of trans* and non-binary gender identities among professionals who work with young people across Wales. They are forming a steering group for young people aged 11-25 who identify somewhere on the trans* spectrum or are gender questioning. Helplines

Meic

Meic is the national information, advocacy and advice helpline for young people in Wales. You can contact a Meic advisor confidentially and anonymously in English and Welsh. The helpline is free to access and open from 8am to midnight, 7 days per week. You can contact Meic by phone (0808 80 23456), text message (84001) or online chat.

Switchboard 

Switchboard is a confidential listening service for people in LGBTQ+ communities. They offer support across the helpline from 10am-10pm daily. You can talk to them for free by email or instant message.
