Body Image the Main Topic at This Year’s Youth Select Committee

This year the British Youth Council‘s Youth Select Committee will be looking into the impact of Body Image on the wellbeing of children and young people.

This comes after almost one million young people voted it as one of the top ten issues in the UK Youth Parliament’s ‘Make Your Mark’ Ballot in 2016. On the 7th July the Committee heard evidence on the topic from experts ranging from bloggers, social media companies and academics.

Today further evidence will be heard from teachers, mental health professionals, young people and government officials. As with UK Parliament Select Committees, the Youth Select Committee will release a report based on their findings. This will then be sent to the Government for comment.

A Significant Issue

It’s good that this problem is being discussed, as recently it has become a significant issue. I’m also glad that that the people actually affected by the topic have been allowed a voice in the discussion. Hopefully, because of the youth representation, the report will be useful and informative. From that point all we can do is hope that the government actually consider it and take real action.
