Would you like to inspire and empower girls in your community? You can as a Y Girls Mentor!
YMCA Cardiff are looking for volunteers who are eager to make a difference in their communities whilst empowering the life of a young person.
What does being a Y Girls Mentor involve?
As a Y Girls Mentor, you’ll regularly meet up with a young person to offer a friendly ear, support, guidance and advice on making positive life choices. You’ll do activities with the young person that are engaging and fun.
As a mentor, you’ll also build a relationship with the young person’s parents/guardians, although the main focus is the young person.
What skills/qualifications are required?
We require no formal qualifications – the only thing on paper that we need is DBS.
However, a good Y Girl Mentor will be someone who:
- Is a good listener
- Engages well in conversations
- Encourage young people to develop important life skills
- Is empathetic
- Is non-judgemental
- Is motivated to see young people achieve goals
It’s important to remember that you’ll need to set a good example to the young person and encourage positive behaviour. You will play an important role in helping a young person achieve their full potential and build on the young person’s strengths.
Is there any training?
Full training will be given and a DBS check will be required (no cost involved).
What’s the application process like?
YMCA Cardiff really value your experiences, knowledge and skills. Through the application form and interview you will be able to reflect on life experiences where you personally have faced difficulties and challenges in life, with which you gained essential learning and understanding about many of the experiences that a young person will face.
Will I be paid?
No. Being a Y Girls Mentor is a voluntary role.
