October 3 @ 7:30 pm - October 4 @ 7:30 pm
Cardiff Players present DROWNING ON DRY LAND by Alan Ayckbourn
TV favourite Charlie Conrad is a man famous for being a failure. As an athlete, and as a quiz show contestant – and yet the nation has taken him to his collective heart. Ambitious and unscrupulous reporter Gale Gilchrist is determined to identify the secret of his popularity and, during a fateful afternoon at a family birthday party, she is witness to events that take an hilariously unexpected turn. Enter Marsha Bates, aka Mr Chortles, children’s entertainer and clown, utterly starstruck by Charlie and about to be the inadvertent cause of his undoing. Mixing clever satire on the nature of celebrity with moments of pure farce, this dark comedy is very much relevant for today – a scorching examination of how some people can become famous for the most inexplicable of reasons, and of how others will go to any lengths to become famous….
