Why you’re about to start hearing more Welsh-language music in Welsh pubs

Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens is at the front of a new campaign that sees more Welsh language music played on the radio and in pubs.

Friday February 8th 2019 has been marked down in the nation’s diary as Welsh Language Music Day 2019, or Dydd Miwsig Cymru. The fourth of its kind, DMC is being promoted by DJ Huw Stephens and actor Rhys Ifans.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens said: “You might be into guitars or grime, hip hop or harmonies, squeaky beats or big singalongs, but whatever gets you grooving, there’s Welsh language music you’ll listen to and fall in love with from the first note. Your next favourite song might just be made in the Welsh language and the fourth Dydd Miwisg Cymru- that’s Welsh Language Music Day in English- on Friday February 8th 2019 is the day to help you discover it.”

Help and support is being made available to any business which wish to take part in DMC 2019 by playing Welsh language music.

S.A.Brains, they of the large Cardiff brewery and owners of 104 Welsh pubs and hotels, will be playing Welsh language music to the estimated 8,000 customers they will have that day. They have also made a further commitment to playing Welsh language music as part of the regular playlists on their hostelries’ sound systems.

“We’re pleased to be leading the way with our pledge to play Welsh language music, and we’d like to encourage our fellow hotel and public house owners to play Welsh language music on Friday the 8th of February 2019.”

So there you have it- do you think your local might like to get involved with Dydd Miwsig Cymru? Why not suggest it to them- there is plenty of time to prepare.
